The BNP Paribas Open, the most attended tennis tournament outside of the four major events, has added the BNP Paribas Open Senior Cup (formerly the Palm Desert Senior Cup), which annually features more than 800 players in a Senior (50 years of age and over) and Super Senior (65 years of age and over) team tennis doubles tournament, it was announced today by tournament director Steve Simon.
The event, which features multiple divisions and will be held from March 21-24, will be played at 11 different country clubs and resorts around the Coachella Valley, with the finals being played at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Thursday, March 24. The entry fee is $175 per player, and includes a grandstand ticket to the BNP Paribas Open finals on Sunday, March 20 and a player reception and dinner on Wednesday, March 23. The registration deadline is Saturday, March 5, 2011.
In addition, the tournament has expanded the BNP Paribas Open Pre-Qualifier to a 64 player men’s and women’s draw, which will be held from March 2-6, 2011. Previously the event was a four player men’s and women’s draw with an expanded challenge round held in February. The event awards one men’s and one women’s qualifying draw wildcard to the winners of the Pre-Qualifier. This year also marks the fifth-annual BNP Paribas Open Tri-Level Championships, an amateur doubles competition involving USTA Sections that is held over the final weekend of the BNP Paribas Open. Each team is comprised of a minimum of 12 players (six women and six men) providing for one doubles team per gender in the 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 ability levels. Last year 15 USTA sections and 255 players from 20 different states participated in the event.
“By adding the BNP Paribas Open Senior Cup and expanding the BNP Paribas Open Pre-Qualifier, we now have tennis taking place for more than three consecutive weeks in March at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden,” said Simon. “Our goal is to continue to enhance and expand the BNP Paribas Open so that players young and old can participate in amateur events surrounding one of the best professional tennis tournaments in the world. These events provide a unique opportunity for amateurs to play next to the pros, and that is something we believe has great possibilities.”
