Former UCLA men's tennis player Nicolas Meister won the BNP Paribas Challenge, defeating Mikhail Ledovskikh 63 26 76 and earning a qualifying wildcard. In the women's draw, Taylor Townsend surged from 0-3 in 3rd to win, defeating Kenin 62 57 64 and also earned a qualifying wildcard.
The BNP Paribas Challenge is a pre-qualifying tournament to provide interested men and women tennis players the opportunity to earn a spot in the BNP Paribas Open Qualifying event. A description of the event format follows:

128 Men and 128 Women
• First round through quarterfinal matches will be the best of three sets with a 10-point match tiebreak being played for the 3rd set.
• Semifinal and final matches will be the best of three sets.
• Champions will advance to the BNP Paribas Open Qualifying event to be held March 6–8, 2017.
