Taylor Townsend wins first WTA match

American teenager Taylor Townsend, ranked No. 435, won her first-ever professional match Thursday with a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(7) effort over Lucie Hradecka, the world No. 87.

"I'm elated," a smiling Townsend, who is just 17, said after the win.

Townsend had received a wildcard into the BNP Paribas Open. She'll play Ana Ivanovic in the second round.

The Chicago native is a former junior world No. 1 and won the Australian Open junior crown in 2013. She's coached by Zina Garrison, a former top 10 player.
