Pospisil Qualifies For Main Draw

Vasek Pospisil secured his spot in the main draw of the BNP Paribas Open after coming from behind to defeat American Rajeev Ram 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 on Wednesday in the final round of qualifying at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

The Canadian, who won the doubles title in the desert with Jack Sock two years ago, will open his singles campaign against Yen-Hsun Lu. The winner will face World No. 1 Andy Murray in the second round.

Dusan Lajovic will face American teenager Frances Tiafoe in the first round after qualifying with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Tobias Kamke. Another American #NextGenATP star, Reilly Opelka, will face a qualifier in the first round after being drawn against Peter Gojowczyk, who defeated Marco Trungelliti 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.


Barbados’ Darian King will make his main draw debut in Indian Wells after beating Mikhail Kukushkin 6-1, 6-4. The 24 year old recently won an ATP World Tour match for the first time when he beat Bernard Tomic in the first round in Memphis. He will look to claim his first Masters 1000 win when he faces fellow qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili, who took advantage of 14 double faults from Alexander Bublik to win 6-3, 7-6(3).

Henri Laaksonen, Elias Ymer, Radu Albot, Santiago Giraldo, Julien Benneteau, Federico Gaio and Marius Copil were the other winners on Wednesday, earning main draw spots.

Men’s main draw play begins on Thursday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, highlighted on Stadium by Americans Tiafoe and Ryan Harrison in action.
