No. 3 seed Karolina Pliskova survived her third-round battle against Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu to advance 6-4, 7-6(2) at the BNP Paribas Open on Sunday.
Pliskova, who lost in last year’s semifinals to eventual champion Victoria Azarenka, needed two hours to book her Round of 16 berth and fought off two set points as Begu served at 5-4 in the second. The 2016 US Open runner-up next plays No. 15 Timea Bacsinszky, a quarter-finalist here in 2015.
"It’ll be a tough one,” said Pliskova. “She’s fit, and she’s played well here."
Pliskova was not joined in the fourth round by her twin sister, Kristyna, though. Fifth seed Dominika Cibulkova saved one match point as she prevailed 2-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(4) in the last match of the day. Pliskova held match point on Cibulkova's serve in the 10th game of the decider, but could not convert as Cibulkova held on to prevail in two hours and 48 minutes.
